There are a bagillion teething products out there - some green and some that claim to be green. Here is a quick run down of what you should know about teether toys before you buy one for a baby to gnaw on all day.
1. MOST PLASTIC TEETHERS CONTAIN CHEMICALS
Most plastic teethers contain chemicals like BPA. If a plastic teether says BPA-free, they mostly likely replaced it with a chemical that is just as, if not more toxic, like PVC. Some are even known carcinogenics!
2. 100% NATURAL RUBBER TEETHERS CONTAIN LATEX PROTEINS AND THE PROCESSING MAY CAUSE HARM TO THE ENVIRONMENT
Allergic to latex? Then avoid rubber teethers. Also be aware that a ton of exposure to these proteins could lead to a latex allergy. Also consider the harmful effects natural rubber processing has on the environment. This process consumes large volumes of water and energy and uses large amount of chemicals.
3. MEDICAL-GRADE SILICONE TEETHERS MAY BE SAFE FOR YOUR BABY, BUT NOT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
Medical-grade silicone teethers are considered hypoallergenic and therefore probably safe for babies. The bad news is that the making and disposal of silicon is not very earth-friendly.
4. LOOK FOR GOTS CERTIFIED ORGANIC COTTON TEETHERS
A ton of teethers are labeled "all-natural" or "organic", but not all are GOTS certified. GOTS certified is the gold standard for organic. If labeled GOTS certified you can trust it will be safe for your baby.
5. ALL-NATURAL WOODEN TEETHERS ARE TRULY SAFE AND NATURAL
Look for all-natural sustainable Maple teethers. They are 100% free of chemicals and naturally antibacterial.
