BEAUTYFOOD: 3 non-toxic ingredients your skin craves

WRITTEN BY LEAH SCHEROTTER / GOOD LIFE

The Toxic Truth.

So many of us today are becoming increasingly focused on knowing what’s going into our bodies. However, we are just starting to think about using that approach in our skincare and beauty routines. And guess what, our bodies absorb more than 65% of what we put on it!

But, the last time the United States passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products was in 1938. And the icky consequence of that: there are more than 80,000 chemicals on our shelves today, and cancer rates, infertility, birth defects, and childhood brain disorders are on the rise.

And this problem is especially prominent in the US. The European Union has banned more than 1,300 ingredients; the US has only banned 11 to date. (gasp!)

The Game Changers.

But, there’s good news. New and innovative companies are popping up everyday using science and their senses to craft transformational products that celebrate our bodies, nourish our cells and make us feel gorgeous too. These companies are shouting their ingredients from the rooftops instead of scrunching them up in tiny font underneath a laundry list of gibberish.

Worried about your all-natural lipstick falling off by 10am? Or your paraben-free mascara clumping by the second swipe? Not these bad boys. Shop Good’s squeaky-clean products actually work, and are some of the most powerful and long lasting we’ve found in the marketplace to date.

So. What are those ingredients that we should slather on, knowing it’s working to beautify us from the inside and out?

Who are the Power Players?

1. Hyaluronic acid:

Closest to your own natural water content in your skin and one of the most hydrating ingredients, hyaluronic acid is as if your skin just downed a tall glass of water!  This ingredient is extra important because after washing off bacteria, we want to return our skin to a healthy and hydrated state. This avoids stripping natural oils, which can contribute to dryness and wrinkles. This is featured as a main ingredient in Skin Remedy’s serum and Foaming Cleanser.

2. Coconut Oil:

You know it well, but when it’s used in makeup and skincare, you’re receiving its healing properties all day! We love coconut oil for its super high antioxidant content and it’s anti-bacterial properties. It’s also jam packed with alpha linoleic acid, which helps speed up cell turnover and healthy cell reproduction. Both our brands Lily Lolo and Herbivore Botanicals are obsessed with the ingredient, and use it in a high quality form in almost all of their products.

3. Rose

This incredibly anti-inflammatory + antibacterial flower is a major force of soothing properties, antioxidants, and beta-carotenes. The end result is clear skin and a glowing complexion that radiates ultra-health. Plus, who doesn’t love the luxurious energy of this blossom?! We are thrilled Herbivore Botanicals utilizes Moroccan Rose in its Coco Rose Body Polish and Wildcare highlights rosehips and rose kaolin clay in the Bee Rosy Clay Mask.

Try Today: Swap it out.

If you’re choosing to go all-natural, don’t feel overwhelmed. There are simple ways to make this switch over time. Running low on your foundation or face wash? Rather than replacing it with the same old, choose to swap out for natural and organic. Or, start with something you use often, like your hand lotion or your favorite lip butter.

Your body will thank you for feeding it well. #beautyfood
