After the holiday maddness has ended I always like to take a moment to organize my home and get it ready for a stress-free year. When my home feels calm, I feel calm, and creates a balanced environment to soak up every moment. Below are 9 of my favorite ways to Feng Shui my home for the New Year.
1. CLEAR THE CLUTTER
Get rid of anything you do not want or need anymore. The number one rule of feng shui is no clutter. Energy, or chi, must be able to flow freely throughout your space. Clutter disrupts the flow creating negative energy. Decluttering, on the other hand, has the opposite effect. You will also feel lighter having less “stuff”.
2. OPEN WINDOWS & DOOR
Good quality air and light is essential for creating good feng shui energy, or chi in your home. Open the windows and doors and let the air flow through your home. Allow as much natural light as possible and consider using full-spectrum lights.
3. CLEAN THE WINDOWS
The windows symbolize your eyes to the world. We want to be able to see and experience everything that the world has to offer us, so keep those windows squeaky clean. I like to keep a rag and non-toxic cleaner in every room to make it super easy to spiff up all windows.
4. BUY AN AIR-PURIFYING PLANT
Plants purify the air by absorbing toxins and electrical pollutants admitted by appliances. Take a look at any dead space throughout your home, especially in the kitchen, that may collect dust or stagnant energy and fill it with a plant. The “chi” can get stuck in these areas and encourages dead energy which may hold you back in your life. Remember not to over clutter your house with plants and fewer, bigger plants are usually better. Here is a list of non-toxic air-purifying plants we love.
5. MOVE YOUR BED
A feng shui concept known as the Command Position suggests placing your bed where you will have a clear vision of the entryway. The headboard should be against a wall and the foot of the bed should never be in line with the door. (The sweet spot is often diagonally across from the door, or the furthest point away, depending on the space.)
6. COVER UP THE TV
Most of us have televisions in our bedroom. It happens. It is a good idea to cover the television when not in use. The active energy of the television as well as the electronic aspect of it may be disruptive to the type of calming, quiet energy more conducive to sleep and relaxation. My suggestion: find a beautiful piece of fabric or moroccan throw to cover it.
7. IF IT’S BROKE, FIX IT!
You know that squeaky door or funky drain you have been meaning to fix? Now is the time to fix it and move on. They reflect a sense of “brokenness.” Try putting a red dot on everything that needs fixing as a way to represent the way you want your space to be. As objects are repaired and you peel the stickers off, it becomes symbolic of a positive change in energy.
8. GET A WATER FOUNTAIN
Fountains are a popular feng shui cure because water is associated with wealth and therefore a flowing fountain helps with the cash flow. Fountains are also natural ionizers, meaning they diffuse negative ions in the air when used indoors. Place your fountain facing the front door to signify wealth flowing in but avoid the bedroom where it will represent worry and sorrow.
9. PUT DOWN THE TOILET SEAT & CLOSE THE BATHROOM DOOR
The feng shui philosophy is that each time you flush, water, and therefore energy, escapes. Don’t flush your money down the toilet! Keep the toilet seat cover down and the bathroom door closed to minimize the loss of both energy and prosperity.

Recently I’ve been substituting my morning coffees with a more seasonally inspired, plant-based brew- what I fondly refer to as my ‘Must Try Pumpkin Chai.’
